11130 The First National Bank of MESA

1918 - Chartered in January, capital of $100,000 - Succeeded The Mesa City Bank
1932 - Placed in receivership Jun. 27th, capital of $100,000
1936 - Unsecured depositors paid 87.72% (Oct 8 - Prescott Courier)

When Mesa City Bank opted to nationalize in 1918, like many national banks chartered after the onset of the Federal Reserve, it declined to take advantage of it's note-issuing privilege.

(1912 Postcard)

However, in 1928 it seems to have reversed its policy, at first issuing large size notes. Unfortunately, times were tough and the bank ultimately fell into receivership

1929-1932

While small size notes from here are relatively obtainable by Arizona standards, large size examples remain challenging, although not to the level they once were.

1935 - 1960

Considered by the bank to be outdated, the original building was razed and this multi-story "improvement" was built in its place.

50 years or so later, what was modern in 1960 became itself obsolete, falling victim to progress via the wrecking ball, and a modern bank building erected in it place. At least the clock has been restored...
